For me, the Man of Steel never looked better than when he flew dauntlessly to thwart mechanical monsters, mad scientists or rampaging apes run amok courtesy of the able paintbrush of Max Fleischer.

If Superman must "reboot" (a phrase -- and mindset -- that I am coming to loathe more every time I hear it), Hollywood could do worse than to look to the 1940s cartoon serials for a "new" design.

You know what DC should do? Either make a new movie or a series based on Golden Age Superman again. What's more, I'm fairly certain modern audiences would be fine with the changed setting. One of the best animated shows currently in syndication is The Legend of Korra, and that takes place in an alternate-universe 1920s (at least it SEEMS a lot like the 20s). The show features a superhero-type character (that could be disputed, but the move to urban heroics pretty much clinches it for me) and was popular enough that a second season was commissioned despite it originally having just been a miniseries. For another example, the movie Captain America was quite successful despite taking place during WWII.

My point is that some people say Superman doesn't quite fit in this day and age. The comic-book industry's usual response is to continuously update the character; however, I personally feel that you can also take the character back to when and where they were first relevant in order for audiences to relate to them. As for Superman's rather large personality change over the years (and yes, there was one)... Superman started as a powerful man who quite frankly was a bit of a heroic jerk, and his "Clark Kent" identity was, for whatever reason, a mere mockery of humanity. In a TV series, his own personal realization of how these are actually character flaws and his growth as a person would make FANTASTIC story arcs.

Wow. Thanks for the inciteful comment. I definitely like some of your ideas here. Citing Joe Johnston's "Captain America" film, whether intended or not, I'll take as a compliment; I feel that the costume/uniform concept designed for that film is one of the best-realized, practical comic-to-film design adaptations produced. I also think you're onto something with growing the character from a faithful version of the original "heroic jerk" to a hero that we root for is a great notion not really explored in Superman comics that I've read before. (Admittedly, I haven't read anything in the New 52 series, but, ostensibly, it just looks like a "slick update" of the character to try to make him "relatable/relevant" or -- the biggest mistake of all -- broody and "more like Batman." I could be wrong; I'll retract my statement if I ever read it...)

Thanks again for the comment!

Brilliant! Excellent use of color and detail. If you ever decide not pursue serious art, you definitely have a future as a sign maker.

Updated with a few tweaks to further enhance the "Ma Kent homemade-uniform on a journalist's salary" aesthetic behind this concept and thereby further distance it from, say, any "laser-etched/computer enhanced spacesuit" concepts.
